Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE): A Minimally Invasive Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis Pain

Understanding Knee Pain & How Western Vascular Institute Can Help

Knee pain is one of the most common complaints among adults, especially those affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As the protective cartilage in the knee wears down, inflammation increases—leading to chronic pain, swelling, and limitations in mobility. For many people, knee pain impacts not only daily activities but also sleep, mood, and overall quality of life.

At Western Vascular Institute, we are committed to offering safe, effective, minimally invasive options to help patients find long-lasting relief without major surgery. One of the advanced treatments we provide is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE).

What Is Knee Osteoarthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the knee joint deteriorates over time. Without this smooth protective layer, bones rub together, causing:

  • Chronic knee pain
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Stiffness, especially after activity
  • Loss of mobility
  • Grinding or catching sensation in the joint

Traditional treatments such as physical therapy, injections, oral pain medication, and lifestyle changes may provide temporary relief, but symptoms often return.

For those who are not yet ready for knee replacement—or want to avoid major surgery—GAE offers an innovative, minimally invasive alternative.

What Is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)?

GAE is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that targets the inflamed tissue and abnormal blood vessels contributing to knee pain from osteoarthritis. By reducing this excess blood flow, GAE can significantly decrease inflammation and pain.

Performed by our board-certified vascular surgeons in our outpatient Office-Based Lab (OBL), GAE allows patients to return home the same day.

How GAE Works

  • A tiny catheter is inserted through a small incision in the wrist or groin.
  • Using advanced imaging guidance, the catheter is directed to the genicular arteries that supply the knee joint.
  • Small embolic particles are injected to reduce abnormal blood flow and inflammation.
  • As inflammation decreases, many patients experience meaningful and long-lasting pain relief.

Benefits of GAE at Western Vascular Institute

✔ Minimally invasive
✔ Performed entirely in our outpatient OBL
✔ Same-day discharge—no hospital stay required
✔ No general anesthesia
✔ No large incisions or surgical scars
✔ Faster recovery than surgical treatment
✔ Significant reduction in knee pain for many patients
✔ May delay or eliminate the need for knee replacement

Is GAE Right for You?

GAE may be a strong option if you:

  • Have knee osteoarthritis and persistent pain
  • Want to avoid or delay knee replacement surgery
  • Did not achieve relief from injections, medications, or physical therapy
  • Prefer a minimally invasive outpatient treatment with minimal downtime
  • Are seeking long-lasting pain reduction without major surgery

Every patient undergoes a personalized evaluation to determine whether GAE is the safest and most effective treatment for their needs.

Understanding Knee Embolization: A Minimally Invasive Solution for Osteoarthritis Pain

What is Knee Embolization?

Knee embolization is a procedure to help reduce blood flow to the lining of the knee. During the procedure, there is a natural formation of a blood clot, air bubble, a piece of fatty deposit, or other objects in the bloodstream to obstruct the artery. This procedure is also called Geniculate artery embolization (GAE).

To see if GAE is right for you, contact Western Vascular Institute today. GAE offers an excellent minimally invasive alternative to knee surgery, and the skilled surgeons at Western Vascular Institute bring extensive experience and expertise to this advanced procedure. What is the Purpose of a Knee Embolization?

This minimally-invasive procedure can help by providing immediate and long term pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA).

How Does it Work?

GAE blocks the blood flow in the areas around the knee that are inflamed.  By blocking these arteries, there is a reduction in the amount of inflammation. This can help or eliminate the associated knee pain without surgery.

This procedure does not treat the underlying disease, but it is an effective way to manage the symptoms.

How is the Knee Embolization Performed?

After a consultation with a GAE to review your goals and medical history, you will be seen for the knee embolization procedure.

  • It is performed through a small puncture in the groin or upper thigh.
  • A thin hollow tube or catheter is positioned in the arteries around the knee.
  • Tiny particles can be injected that block the capillaries around the lining of the knee, a technique called embolization.
  • The procedure generally takes between 45 and 90 minutes.
  • You are able to go home the same day.

Am I a Candidate for Knee Embolization?

If you are considering this procedure, give us a call. We can discuss your health and desired outcomes to see if this is the right fit for you.

Typically, ideal candidates for knee embolization include those who:

  • Have moderate to severe knee pain
  • Are between ages 40-80
  • Have tenderness in the knee area
  • Have failed other conservative treatment options
  • Have confirmed osteoarthritis based on x-ray
  • Do not have bony deformity or sclerosis
  • Would rather be an ideal candidate for knee replacement surgery
