Plaque that accumulates in the walls of the arteries is a waxy substance made up of fat, cholesterol, cellular waste, calcium, and fibrin. Some causes of plaque build-up are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and smoking. These substances damage the lining of the artery accumulating over time until it completely blocks the artery.
